Read about the different types of clouds and their names, then complete the activities below!
Types of Clouds:
- Cumulus: These are fluffy, white clouds that look like cotton balls. They are often seen on sunny days.
- Stratus: These clouds are gray and usually cover the sky like a blanket, bringing overcast conditions.
- Cirrus: Thin, wispy clouds high in the sky, often indicating fair weather but sometimes a change is coming.
- Nimbus: Clouds that are associated with rain and storms, often dark and heavy.
Where Do Their Names Come From?
Many cloud names come from Latin. Here are a few sources:
- Cumulus comes from the Latin word for "heap" or "pile."
- Stratus means "to stretch" in Latin.
- Cirrus means "curl" in Latin, referring to the wispy appearance.
- Nimbus comes from the Latin word for "rain" or "storm."
