Read the information below about the change of states in matter. Then answer the questions and complete the diagram below to show your understanding of the process.
Change of State
Matter can exist in three primary states: solid, liquid, and gas. The state of matter can change from one form to another when heat is added or removed.
- Melting: The change from solid to liquid when heat is added.
- Freezing: The change from liquid to solid when heat is removed.
- Evaporation: The change from liquid to gas when heat is added.
- Condensation: The change from gas to liquid when heat is removed.
- Sublimation: The change from solid to gas without becoming a liquid.
- Deposition: The change from gas to solid without becoming a liquid.
Questions
- What is melting?
- List two examples of sublimation.
- What happens during condensation?
- Draw and label a diagram showing the change of states. Be sure to include all six states.
