Roman numerals are a numeral system originating from ancient Rome, using combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet. The basic Roman numerals are as follows:

Roman numerals are usually written largest to smallest from left to right. However, there are exceptions, such as IV for 4 and IX for 9, where a smaller numeral is placed before a larger numeral to indicate subtraction.
