Instructions

Today, you're going to explore the fascinating world of chemistry by creating your very own DIY volcano! Follow the steps below to learn about the reaction that causes the volcanic eruption.

Materials Needed:

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • A container to hold your volcano (like a plastic bottle)
  • A tray or a large dish to catch any overflow

Steps:

  1. Construct your volcano: Use the container (plastic bottle) as the center of your volcano. You can shape it with clay or play-dough around it to make it look like a volcano.
  2. In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with a few drops of dish soap and food coloring. This will be your "lava".
  3. Pour the "lava" mixture into the volcano.
  4. In another container, measure out 1/2 cup of vinegar.
  5. When you're ready, pour the vinegar into the volcano and watch the eruption happen!

Let's Learn!

Answer the questions below to learn more about the chemistry behind your volcano.

1. What do you think happens when vinegar and baking soda mix? Write your answer:

2. Why do you think adding dish soap and food coloring helps make your volcano look cooler?

3. Describe what you saw when your volcano erupted. What colors and textures did you notice?

4. Can you think of other ingredients you could use to make different types of eruptions? List some ideas:

5. Write a short paragraph about what you enjoyed most about making your volcano.

Experiment Time!

Once you've answered the questions, you can try changing the recipe a little. For example, use more baking soda or less vinegar. Write down any changes and observe what happens!
