Today, you will practice writing a formal letter. A formal letter is used for important communications, such as applying for a job, writing to a teacher, or contacting a business. Follow the steps below to write your own formal letter.
Step 1: Write the Sender's Address
Start your letter by writing your address in the top right corner. Include your street address, city, and postal code.
Step 2: Write the Date
Write the date one line below the address. Use the format: Day Month Year (e.g., 15 October 2023).
Step 3: Write the Recipient's Address
Write the recipient's address below the date. Include their name, street address, city, and postal code.
Step 4: Write the Salutation
Start your letter with a formal greeting, such as "Dear Ms. Smith,". Always use a comma after the salutation.
Step 5: Write the Body of the Letter
The body of the letter should have at least three paragraphs. Introduce yourself, state the purpose of the letter, and conclude politely. Use proper grammar and spelling.
Step 6: Write the Closing
End your letter with a formal closing, such as "Yours sincerely," or "Best regards,". Leave space for your signature above your printed name.
