We can't see the bottom of the deep ocean, but we can make a map of it! Boats send a special sound down into the water. This sound is called sonar. The sound hits the ocean floor and bounces back up like an echo. By listening to the echo, we can tell if the floor is deep or shallow, and we can draw a map!

Activity 1: Match the Words

Draw a line from the word on the left to what it does on the right.

Sonar The bottom of the ocean, with its mountains and hills.
Boat Floats on the water and sends out the special sound.
Ocean Floor The special sound that bounces back to make a map.

Activity 2: Fill in the Missing Letters

These words help us talk about sonar. Can you find the missing vowel (a, e, i, o, u) to finish each word?

S _ NAR

B _ _ T

D E _ P

M _ P

Activity 3: Help the Sound Travel!

The sonar sound has to travel from the boat to the ocean floor and back again. Draw a line from the BOAT, down to the STAR, and back up to the BOAT without touching the friendly octopus!
