Note: The answers below are examples. Student responses will vary. Assess based on creativity, use of descriptive language, and relevance to the prompt.

Part 1: Create a Character

Look for an imaginative name, physical description with adjectives (e.g., small, purple, sparkly, furry), and a clear magical power.

Example Answer: My creature is called a Glimmerwing. It is a tiny, dragonfly-like creature with sparkly, rainbow wings and soft, blue fur. Its special power is that it can sing a song that makes flowers grow instantly.

Part 2: Describe a Setting

Look for the use of sensory details (sight, sound, feeling) and at least three adjectives. The description should relate to an old castle.

Example Answer: I see huge, dusty cobwebs hanging from the high ceiling. I can hear the wind whistling through a broken window. I feel a cold chill as I walk on the hard, stone floor.

Part 3: Continue the Story

Look for a logical and creative continuation of the story. The sentences should follow on from the prompt.

Example Answer: ...it opened its mouth and a tiny, glowing bubble floated out. The bubble drifted up to my face and popped, whispering a secret message only I could hear. It told me to follow it to a hidden treasure.

  1. Example Answer: The enormous, green dragon flew majestically over the tall castle.
