A Splash of History
Did you know that humans started drinking milk from other animals about 10,000 years ago? This was around the time people began to domesticate animals like cows, goats, and sheep. For thousands of years, milk was consumed raw, straight from the animal. This could sometimes be risky because raw milk can contain harmful bacteria that make people sick.
Everything changed in the 1860s thanks to a brilliant French scientist named Louis Pasteur. He invented a process called pasteurization. This method involves heating milk to a specific temperature for a set period to kill most of the harmful bacteria. This not only made milk much safer to drink but also helped it stay fresh for longer. Pasteur's invention completely changed the dairy industry and is why the milk we buy in stores today is safe and lasts for days in the fridge.
Answer the questions based on the text above:
- About how long ago did humans start drinking milk from animals?
- Who invented the process that makes milk much safer to drink?
- What is the process called, and what does it do to the milk?

Answer Key
A Splash of History
- About 10,000 years ago.
- Louis Pasteur.
- The process is called pasteurization. It involves heating milk to kill harmful bacteria, making it safer and last longer.
Milky Maths
- 2 litres = 2000 ml. 2000 ml ÷ 250 ml = 8. You can pour 8 full glasses.
- 150 ml x 4 people = 600 ml. They use 600 ml of milk in total.
-
To get at least 4.5 litres, you could buy:
- Three 2-litre cartons = 6 litres. Cost: 3 x £1.50 = £4.50
- Two 2-litre cartons and one 1-litre carton = 5 litres. Cost: (2 x £1.50) + £0.80 = £3.00 + £0.80 = £3.80
