Instructions

This activity introduces your child to the concept of "history" in the most personal way: their own growth! Sit with your child in your lap. Point to each box and talk about what you see. Use an excited and happy voice. The goal is interaction and language development, not a "correct" answer.

THEN (You were a tiny baby!) NOW (You are a big kid!)
A drawing of tiny baby feet.
(Ask: "Where were your tiny baby feet?")
A drawing of bigger feet for walking and running.
(Ask: "Where are your big walking feet now? Let's stomp them!")
A drawing of a baby drinking from a bottle.
(Say: "You used to drink from a little bottle.")
A drawing of a toddler's sippy cup or open cup.
(Say: "Now you drink from a big kid cup! Yay!")
A drawing of a baby crawling on the floor.
(Say: "Look! The baby is crawling! That was you!")
A drawing of a toddler standing up tall and playing with a ball.
(Say: "And now you can stand so tall! Can you stand up?")

Answer Key

This is a guided activity for a 1-year-old. The "answers" involve physical interaction and verbal engagement rather than marking the page. The goal is to help the child connect the concepts of "then" (their recent past as a smaller baby) and "now" (their current abilities).

  • Row 1 (Feet): The caregiver helps the child point to the "Then" picture while talking about baby feet, then points to or wiggles the child's actual feet for the "Now" picture.
  • Row 2 (Drinking): The caregiver points to the bottle ("Then") and then to the child's actual cup ("Now"), celebrating their new skill.
  • Row 3 (Movement): The caregiver points to the crawling baby ("Then") and then encourages the child to stand up or walk ("Now") to demonstrate their growth.

Success is measured by the child's engagement: looking at the pictures, listening to your voice, smiling, and participating in the physical actions.
