Reading Corner: The Clever Fox

Read the short story below and answer the questions that follow in full sentences.

Felix the fox was known throughout the forest for being incredibly clever. One sunny afternoon, he was trotting near a farmer's tall fence when he smelled something delicious: fresh blackberry pie cooling on a windowsill. His tummy rumbled loudly. The farmer's dog, Barnaby, was sleeping on the porch, so Felix knew he had to be quiet.

Instead of trying to jump the fence, Felix found a loose stone near the riverbank. He picked it up and tossed it into the bushes on the far side of the house. *CRASH!* Barnaby shot up, barking, and ran to see what the noise was. While the dog was distracted, Felix slipped silently through the gate, grabbed the wonderful pie, and was gone before Barnaby returned.

Questions:

  1. What is the fox's name?
  2. What delicious food did Felix smell?
  3. What was the farmer's dog, Barnaby, doing at the start of the story?
  4. How did Felix distract Barnaby?
  5. Do you think Felix was clever? Why or why not?
