The Witch of Whisperwind and the Spectral Friend
In the year 1487, nestled in a quiet English valley, lived a woman named Elara. The villagers called her a witch, but not with the fear that was beginning to creep across the land. Elara was a healer. Her cottage, with its thatched roof and crooked chimney, was a sanctuary. Shelves overflowed with jars of glowing moss, dried herbs, and shimmering liquids that smelled of cinnamon and rain. Her magic was the quiet, kind sort—the kind that mended broken wings and soothed fevers.
Elara was not alone. Her constant companion was Pip, a ghost who had haunted the cottage for over a century. Pip was a boy of about twelve when he'd become a spirit, and he retained his mischievous, youthful energy. He was translucent, like spun sugar, and drifted through walls with a faint, silvery shimmer. Most of the time, he was a cheerful companion, rearranging Elara’s potion books as a prank or telling her stories of the knights and ladies he'd seen long ago.
One evening, however, Pip was unusually quiet. He floated near the hearth, his form flickering sadly. "What troubles you, little spirit?" Elara asked, her voice as gentle as a breeze.
"I heard the men in the village," Pip whispered, his voice like rustling leaves. "They were reading from a new book, a terrible book that calls all magic evil. They spoke your name, Elara. I'm afraid for you."
Elara smiled, though a flicker of concern crossed her face. She placed a comforting hand on Pip’s shimmering shoulder, a gesture he could feel as a warm tingle. "Fear is a powerful and blinding magic, my friend. But kindness is a stronger shield. We will be safe as long as we have each other." She then began to hum a cheerful tune, and the glowing moss in the jars pulsed with a soft, reassuring light, chasing the shadows from the room and from Pip's heart.

History
The story is set in 1487. This was a significant time in history regarding beliefs about witchcraft. A book called the Malleus Maleficarum (which means "The Hammer of Witches" in Latin) was published in Germany in late 1486 or early 1487. This book was a guide for hunting witches and it described witchcraft as a dangerous and evil crime. It helped spread fear and superstition across Europe, leading to many tragic witch trials in the centuries that followed. Before this period, many people saw local healers or "cunning folk" like Elara as helpful members of the community.
Based on the text above, answer the following questions:
- What does Malleus Maleficarum mean in English?
- In what country was this book first published?
- How did the book change some people's views on magic and witchcraft?

- Elara is making a "Potion of Courage" for Pip. The recipe requires 3 drops of liquid sunshine, 6 powdered moonbeams, and 4 brave thoughts. If she wants to make enough for 5 potions, how many total ingredients will she need?
- The story says Pip has been a ghost for "over a century" (a century is 100 years). If the story is set in 1487 and Pip became a ghost in 1352, exactly how many years has he been haunting the cottage?
- Elara's herb garden has 40 plants. 1/4 of the plants are lavender, 1/2 are mint, and the rest are chamomile. How many chamomile plants does Elara have?
