Instructions
Writing a story is like going on an adventure where you are in complete control! You get to create the world, the characters, and decide what happens next. Don't worry about making it perfect. The goal is to have fun and let your imagination run wild. Follow the steps below to build your own amazing narrative.
Part 1: Find Your Spark
Every great story starts with a small idea. Let's find one for you! Choose one of the methods below.
Option A: Story Spinner
Create a strange and wonderful story idea by picking one item from each column. Mix and match to create a funny or exciting combination!
| Character | Setting | Problem |
|---|---|---|
| A grumpy garden gnome | A floating castle in the clouds | A magical pet has gone missing |
| A teenage robot who loves to bake | An abandoned shopping mall at midnight | A priceless cookie recipe is stolen |
| A secret agent who is also a grandma | The inside of a computer video game | The main character keeps shrinking |
| A talking squirrel with a tiny sword | A mysterious, glowing forest | They accidentally travelled to the future |
Option B: "What If...?" Questions
Read these questions and pick one that makes you curious. Your story will be the answer!
- What if you woke up one morning and could understand what animals were saying?
- What if you found a remote control that could pause, rewind, and fast-forward real life?
- What if your shadow came to life and started causing trouble?
- What if you discovered a secret door in your school that led to another world?
Option C: Picture This!
Read the paragraph below. What happens next? Continue the story.
The old, dusty chest in the attic creaked open. You weren't supposed to be up here, but the strange humming sound had been impossible to ignore. As the heavy lid fell back with a thud, a soft, pulsating blue light spilled out from inside, casting strange shadows on the walls. You leaned closer, peering into the light, and saw it wasn't a lamp, but a single, swirling marble...
Part 2: Map Your Adventure
Before you start writing, jot down a few ideas. This is your secret map to a great story. It doesn't need to be in full sentences!
| My Story Idea: | |
| Beginning: Introduce your character and setting. |
|
| Middle: What is the main problem or adventure? What happens? |
|
| End: How is the problem solved? What happens to the characters? |
Part 3: Let's Write!
Now it's time to bring your story to life. Use your map from Part 2 to guide you. Try to write at least two or three paragraphs. Remember to use interesting describing words (adjectives and adverbs) and maybe some dialogue (characters talking) to make it exciting!

Answer Key / Writer's Checklist
There are no "right" or "wrong" answers in creative writing. This is a checklist to help you see if you've included the key ingredients of a great story. Read your story and tick the boxes for the things you've done.
- [ ] An Interesting Beginning: Did you introduce your main character(s) and the setting (where the story takes place)? Does it make the reader want to know more?
- [ ] A Clear Middle: Is there a problem, a challenge, or an adventure that your character has to face? Did you describe the events that happened?
- [ ] A Satisfying End: Did you explain how the problem was solved or how the adventure ended? We know what happened to the character(s).
- [ ] "Show, Don't Tell": Instead of saying a character was "scared," did you describe it? (e.g., "Her heart hammered in her chest and her hands began to shake.")
- [ ] Sensory Details: Did you use words that describe sights, sounds, smells, tastes, or feelings? (e.g., "the sweet smell of baking cookies," "a loud, crashing sound").
- [ ] Dialogue: Do any of your characters talk to each other? Remember to use quotation marks (" ").
- [ ] Proofreading: Did you read your story one last time to check for spelling mistakes or punctuation errors (like full stops and capital letters)?
Great work! Every story you write helps you become a better and more creative writer.
