Chapter 1: Things Around Us
- Look around the room you are in. Write down two examples of living things and two examples of non-living things.
Living things: ____________________, ____________________
Non-living things: ____________________, ____________________
- What is the main difference between a living thing (like a puppy) and a non-living thing (like a toy car)?
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
- A paper book is made from the wood of a tree. Is the book a living thing, a non-living thing, or something that was once alive? Explain why.

Chapter 2: Animals
- All animals have basic needs to stay alive. Name three things that every animal needs to survive.
1. ____________________
2. ____________________
3. ____________________
- Animals can be sorted into groups. For example, a shark is a fish. Name another animal group and give an example of an animal that belongs to it.
Animal Group: ____________________
Example Animal: ____________________
- A camel lives in the hot, sandy desert and has wide, flat feet. How do you think these special feet help the camel in its home?

Chapter 3: Food Chains
- Draw a simple food chain in the box below using a plant, a rabbit, and a fox. Use arrows to show the flow of energy.
- In a food chain, what do we call an animal that gets its energy by eating only plants?
_________________________________________________________________________
- Imagine a food chain: Grass → Grasshopper → Frog. What would happen to the number of frogs if a disease wiped out most of the grasshoppers?

Chapter 4: Parts of Plants and Humans
Part 1: The Plant
Draw a picture of a plant in the box. Then, label these four parts: root, stem, leaf, and flower. Next to each label, write down one important job that part does for the plant.
Part 2: The Human Body
- I am an organ in your head that controls everything you do, from thinking to moving your legs. What organ am I?
_________________________________________________________________________
- When you breathe in, you fill two organs in your chest with air. What are these organs called and what is their main job?
Organ Name: ____________________
Their Job: ________________________________________________________________
- After you chew and swallow your food, it goes to your stomach. What important job does the stomach do?

Answer Key
Chapter 1: Things Around Us
- (Answers will vary.)
Living things: a person, a plant, a pet, a fly.
Non-living things: a chair, a table, a pencil, a computer. - Living things can grow, move on their own, breathe, and need food and water. Non-living things cannot do these things.
- The book is non-living, but it was once alive. This is because it is made from wood, which came from a tree, and a tree is a living thing.
Chapter 2: Animals
- Animals need food, water, and air (oxygen) to survive. (Other correct answers: shelter, space).
- (Answers will vary.) Examples:
Animal Group: Mammal, Example Animal: Dog
Animal Group: Bird, Example Animal: Pigeon
Animal Group: Insect, Example Animal: Ant - The camel's wide feet help it walk on soft sand without sinking in.
Chapter 3: Food Chains
- The drawing should show: Plant → Rabbit → Fox. The arrows must point from the thing being eaten to the thing that eats it.
- An animal that eats only plants is called a herbivore (or a primary consumer).
- If most of the grasshoppers disappeared, the frogs would have less food to eat. The number of frogs would likely go down because they might starve or move away.
Chapter 4: Parts of Plants and Humans
Part 1: The Plant
The drawing should show a plant with its parts correctly labeled.
- Root: Holds the plant in the ground and absorbs water and nutrients.
- Stem: Supports the plant and carries water and food to other parts.
- Leaf: Makes food for the plant using sunlight (photosynthesis).
- Flower: Helps the plant make seeds to grow new plants.
Part 2: The Human Body
- You are the brain.
- Organ Name: Lungs.
Their Job: To take in oxygen from the air when we breathe in and get rid of carbon dioxide when we breathe out. - The stomach uses special juices (acids) to break down food into a mushy liquid before it moves to the intestines.
