Part 1: Expanded Form - Stretching Out Numbers!

What is Expanded Form?

Numbers are made up of different parts. Expanded form is when we take a number and stretch it out to show the value of each digit. We break it down into its Hundreds, Tens, and Ones.

Example:

Let's look at the number 258.

  • The 2 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 200.
  • The 5 is in the tens place, so its value is 50.
  • The 8 is in the ones place, so its value is 8.

So, the expanded form of 258 is: 200 + 50 + 8

Your Turn!

Write the expanded form for each number.

  1. 593 = ____________ + ____________ + ____________
  2. 174 = ____________ + ____________ + ____________
  3. 820 = ____________ + ____________ + ____________
  4. 406 = ____________ + ____________ + ____________
  5. 989 = ____________ + ____________ + ____________

Now, let's go backwards! Write the normal number (standard form) for each expanded form.

  1. 300 + 40 + 5 = ____________
  2. 700 + 10 + 2 = ____________
  3. 600 + 0 + 9 = ____________
  4. 200 + 80 + 0 = ____________
  5. 100 + 60 + 7 = ____________

Part 2: Odd or Even?

What are Odd and Even Numbers?

A simple trick can help you tell if any number is odd or even. You only need to look at the very last digit (the digit in the ones place)!

  • EVEN numbers end in one of these digits: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8.
  • ODD numbers end in one of these digits: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9.

Example:

  • The number 476 is EVEN because it ends in a 6.
  • The number 891 is ODD because it ends in a 1.

Your Turn!

Look at each number below. Is it ODD or EVEN? Write your answer on the line.

  1. 358 ____________________
  2. 129 ____________________
  3. 990 ____________________
  4. 741 ____________________
  5. 266 ____________________
  6. 555 ____________________
  7. 407 ____________________
  8. 814 ____________________
