Part 2: Short Answer
(Note: Student answers may vary slightly but should contain the key ideas below.)
- A food chain shows a single path of energy transfer (e.g., grass -> rabbit -> fox). A food web is more complex and shows many interconnected food chains in an ecosystem.
- Evaporation: The sun heats water, turning it into a gas (water vapor). Condensation: The water vapor cools and turns back into liquid water droplets, forming clouds. Precipitation: Water falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. (Any two are acceptable).
- Friction is a force that resists motion when two surfaces rub against each other. It is helpful because it allows us to walk without slipping, lets car brakes work, or allows us to grip objects.
- A skeleton is important for support (it gives the body its shape), protection (it protects vital organs like the brain and heart), and movement (muscles attach to bones to allow us to move). (Any two are acceptable).
- An inherited trait is a characteristic passed down from parents to their offspring through genes. Examples include eye color, hair color, or having attached/detached earlobes.
- Renewable energy is energy that comes from a source that will not run out. Examples include solar power (from the sun), wind power, or hydropower (from moving water).
- A physical adaptation is a body part or feature that helps an organism survive in its environment. For example, a polar bear has thick fur to stay warm in the arctic, or a giraffe has a long neck to reach leaves high in trees.
- Astronauts float in space because they are in a state of constant freefall around the Earth, which creates a feeling of weightlessness. This is called microgravity.
- To make it a fair test, you must keep other variables the same, such as the amount of water, the amount of sunlight, the type of bean plant, or the size of the pot. (Any one is acceptable).
- A solid turns into a liquid when heat is added, causing its particles to move faster and break free. This process is called melting.
