Part D: Short Answer Questions (Example Answers)
- People can live on Earth because it has air (oxygen) to breathe and liquid water to drink. The Moon does not have these.
- Rotation is when the Earth spins on its axis (causes day and night).
Revolution is when the Earth moves in its orbit around the Sun (causes the year). - The Earth would look like a big, bright, blue and white ball that hangs in the sky. It would also have phases, just like we see the Moon.
- Earth has one moon.
- The surface of the Moon is rocky, dusty, and covered in craters. It is grey and has no water.
- The phases of the Moon are the different amounts of the sunlit part of the Moon we can see from Earth as it orbits us. (e.g., Full Moon, New Moon, Crescent Moon).
- They are called "maria" or "seas".
- Astronauts need special suits to provide air to breathe and to protect them from the very hot and very cold temperatures on the Moon.
- (Drawing should show a smaller Moon circling a larger Earth. An arrow should indicate the path. Labels for "Earth" and "Moon" should be present.)
Earth↺
- (Drawing should show a circle for the Earth, a dashed line going through the North and South poles for the axis, and a curved arrow around the axis to show rotation.)
