Reading Passage: The Oompa Loompas
Before they became the famous workers in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, the Oompa Loompas lived in the thick, dangerous jungles of Loompaland. Their lives were filled with fear because of the terrible beasts that roamed the land. Vicious creatures like Hornswogglers, Snozzwangers, and the dreadful Whangdoodles were a constant threat, and the Oompa Loompas had to live in treehouses to try and stay safe.
Despite the dangers, the Oompa Loompas had one great love: the cacao bean. This bean, which is the main ingredient in chocolate, was their favorite food, but it was very difficult for them to find. They were lucky if they found just a few beans a year.
Willy Wonka discovered the Oompa Loompas during his travels. Seeing their difficult situation and their passion for cacao beans, he made them a generous offer. He invited the entire tribe to come and live in his factory. In exchange for their work, they would be paid in cacao beans—as many as they could ever want! They would also be safe from all the terrible creatures of Loompaland. The Oompa Loompas joyfully accepted and became the sole workers in the factory. They are known for their small size, mischievous personalities, and their tendency to break into song to teach a moral lesson whenever one of the naughty children on the tour meets a sticky end.
