Let's Learn About Plant Types!
- Trees: Very big and strong plants. They have a single, thick, hard, and woody stem called a trunk. They have many branches and live for many years.
- Shrubs: Smaller than trees. They have many hard, woody stems that grow from near the ground. They look bushy.
- Creepers: Plants with very weak stems. They cannot stand straight and grow along the ground.
- Climbers: Plants with weak stems that need support to grow upwards. They use special parts like tendrils to "climb" up walls, other plants, or sticks.
- Thorny Plants: These plants have sharp, pointy parts called thorns. Thorns protect the plant from being eaten by animals. They can be trees, shrubs, or climbers.

Part 2: Think and Write (Sample Answers)
1. What are the two main differences between a tree and a shrub?
A tree has one single, thick woody stem (trunk), while a shrub has many smaller woody stems. Trees are usually much taller than shrubs.
2. Why can't creepers grow tall like trees?
Creepers cannot grow tall because their stems are very weak and cannot support the plant's weight to stand upright.
3. Name two examples of trees and two examples of creepers.
Trees: Mango, Banyan, Oak, Pine (any two valid examples)
Creepers: Watermelon, Pumpkin, Strawberry (any two valid examples)
4. How do climbers grow upwards if their stems are weak?
They use support from other objects like walls, sticks, or other plants. They have special parts like tendrils that wrap around the support to help them climb.
5. Look at the text diagram... What type of plant is it? How can you tell?
Plant Type: Climber
Reason: It has a weak stem and is growing up along a support (the vertical line).
6. A gardener wants to grow peas... What should the gardener provide?
The gardener should provide some kind of support, like a trellis, sticks, or a net for the pea plants to climb on.
7. Fill in the missing information in the table below.
| Plant Name | Plant Type | One Key Feature |
|---|---|---|

| Pumpkin | Creeper | Grows along the ground |
| Rose / Hibiscus / Jasmine (any valid shrub) | Shrub | Is bushy with many woody stems |
8. Name one plant that has thorns and explain why the thorns are useful to it.
A rose plant has thorns. The thorns protect it from animals that might try to eat its leaves or flowers.
9. Sort the following plants into the correct categories...
| Trees | Shrubs | Climbers | Creepers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banyan | Lemon | Grapevine | Watermelon |
| Rose |
10. What is the difference between a creeper and a climber?
