Friction is a special force that happens when things rub together. It slows them down! Let's explore how it works.
Part 1: The Direction of Friction
Friction always pushes in the opposite direction of movement. If you push something forward, friction pushes backward!
Read the sentences below. Draw an arrow (--> or <--) to show which way friction is pushing.
- A soccer ball is rolling to the right across the grass.
Movement is going this way: ------->
Which way is friction pushing? [ Draw your arrow here ] - You are pulling a heavy wagon to the left.
Movement is going this way: <-------
Which way is friction pushing? [ Draw your arrow here ] - A toy car is zooming down a ramp.
Movement is going down: ↓
Which way is friction pushing? [ Draw your arrow here ]
Part 2: More or Less Friction?
Rough surfaces create MORE friction and make it hard for things to move. Smooth surfaces create LESS friction and let things slide easily!
Look at the list of surfaces. Decide if they create MORE friction or LESS friction. Write each one in the correct box below.
Carpet Ice Sandpaper Polished Wood Floor Grass A Wet Slide
| MORE Friction (Rough) | LESS Friction (Smooth) |

Part 3: Friction Challenge!
Read each question and circle the best answer.
- You want to go down a playground slide as fast as you can! Which slide would you choose?
A) A slide covered in sand.
B) A slide covered in water.
C) A slide covered in carpet.
- Why are car tires made of rubber with lots of grooves (bumpy patterns)?
A) To create less friction and slide around.
B) To look cool.
C) To create more friction and grip the road.
- A hockey player hits a puck across the ice. It slides for a very long time because:
A) The ice has very little friction.
B) The puck is black.
C) The ice has a lot of friction.
