Read the short explanations about how clouds and rainbows are formed. Then, answer the questions below to see what you've learned!
How Do Clouds Form? It's Like Magic Water!
Have you ever looked up at the fluffy clouds and wondered how they got there? It all starts with the water cycle!
- Evaporation: The sun shines down and heats up water in lakes, rivers, and oceans. This heat turns the liquid water into an invisible gas called water vapor. The water vapor rises up into the sky.
- Condensation: As the water vapor gets higher in the sky, the air gets much colder. This cold air makes the water vapor turn back into tiny, tiny liquid water droplets. This process is called condensation.
- Cloud Formation: These tiny water droplets are so light that they float in the air. When billions of them group together, they form a cloud that we can see from the ground!
How Do Rainbows Form? A Splash of Color!
Rainbows are amazing light shows that happen in the sky. To see a rainbow, you need two things: sunlight and raindrops.
Sunlight might look white, but it's actually made up of many different colors mixed together. When sunlight shines through a raindrop, the raindrop acts like a tiny prism. It bends the light, splitting it apart into all its beautiful colors. This is called refraction. For you to see the rainbow, the sun must be behind you and the rain must be in front of you.
Let's Check What You Know!
Answer the following questions based on what you just read.
Part 1: Circle the Correct Answer
- When the sun's heat turns water into an invisible gas called water vapor, it's called:
- A) Condensation
- B) Evaporation
- C) Refraction
- What are clouds made of?
- A) Smoke from chimneys
- B) Big drops of rain
- C) Billions of tiny water droplets
- Which two things do you need to see a rainbow?
- A) The moon and stars
- B) Wind and snow
- C) Sunlight and raindrops
- A raindrop splits sunlight into different colors because it acts like a tiny:
- A) Mirror
- B) Prism
- C) Magnifying glass
- True or False: For you to see a rainbow, the sun needs to be in front of you.
- A) True
- B) False
Part 2: Write Your Answer
- In your own words, explain how a cloud is formed. Start your explanation with the sun heating up water on the ground.
- What is the science word for when light bends as it passes through a raindrop?
- Can you list the 7 colors of the rainbow in order? (Hint: Think of the name ROY G. BIV!)

Answer Key
Part 1: Circle the Correct Answer
- B) Evaporation
- C) Billions of tiny water droplets
- C) Sunlight and raindrops
- B) Prism
- B) False (The sun must be behind you.)
Part 2: Write Your Answer
- (Answers will vary, but should include these steps) First, the sun heats water and it evaporates into water vapor. Then, the vapor rises, gets cold, and condenses into tiny water droplets. Finally, these droplets group together to make a cloud.
- Refraction
- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
