Read through the explanations and examples below. Complete all four parts of the worksheet to practice identifying and using formal and creative writing styles.

Part 1: Understanding the Difference

Writing isn't a "one size fits all" skill. The way you write an essay for school is very different from how you might write a story for a friend. Let's break down the key differences between Formal/Academic Writing and Creative Writing.

Feature Formal / Academic Writing Creative Writing
Purpose To inform, argue, analyze, or explain a topic based on evidence and facts. To entertain, tell a story, express emotion, or explore an idea imaginatively.
Tone Objective, serious, and impersonal. Avoids personal feelings and opinions unless supported by evidence. Can be subjective, personal, emotional, humorous, or dramatic. The author's voice is prominent.
Language Precise, clear vocabulary. Avoids slang, contractions (e.g., "don't," "can't"), and clichés. Often written in the third person ("he," "she," "it," "they"). Uses figurative language (metaphors, similes), descriptive words, and dialogue. Can use slang and contractions to create a realistic voice. Can be written in any person (first, second, or third).
Structure Highly structured with an introduction, body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a conclusion. Follows logical progression. Flexible. Can be chronological, non-linear (using flashbacks), or poetic. Structure serves the story or emotional arc.

Part 2: Style Detective

Read the following passages. Identify each as either Formal or Creative writing and briefly explain your reasoning.

  1. The sun bled across the horizon, painting the bruised clouds in hues of orange and violent violet. Below, the city was just waking up, a monster stretching its concrete limbs, unaware of the storm brewing in my heart. I clutched the ticket in my hand. It was a one-way trip to anywhere but here.

  2. Economic data from the fourth quarter indicates a 1.5% increase in consumer spending, a figure primarily attributed to seasonal retail trends. This report will analyze the correlation between holiday marketing campaigns and the observed rise in expenditure. Further research is required to determine the long-term sustainability of this growth.

  3. Ugh, I can't believe Mr. Harrison gave us another essay. He's always going on and on about the "socio-political ramifications" of stuff. I just wanna know if Romeo and Juliet actually liked each other. It's all so dramatic. I bet if they had phones, the whole thing would've been sorted out in, like, five minutes.

  4. The process of photosynthesis is fundamental to life on Earth. Through this biochemical reaction, plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy, synthesising organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water. Oxygen is released as a significant by-product, which is essential for aerobic respiration in animals.

Part 3: Formal Makeover

Rewrite the following informal sentences into a more formal, academic style. Avoid contractions, slang, and first-person opinions ("I think").

  1. Informal: It's a really bad idea to text while you're walking 'cause you could totally get hurt.

    Formal: __________________________________________________________________

  2. Informal: The author's book was awesome, and I think it shows how war is just a huge mess.

    Formal: __________________________________________________________________

  3. Informal: Lots of people don't get enough sleep, and it's making them cranky and unable to focus in school.

    Formal: __________________________________________________________________

Part 4: You're the Writer

Choose one of the following topics: A) The impact of social media OR B) The importance of teamwork. Write two short paragraphs (2-4 sentences each) on your chosen topic.

  • The first paragraph must be in a creative or informal style.
  • The second paragraph must be in a formal, academic style.

Part 3: Formal Makeover

  1. Formal: Using a mobile device while walking can be dangerous and may lead to injury. / Pedestrians who use mobile phones are at an increased risk of accidents.
  2. Formal: The author's work effectively illustrates the chaotic and destructive nature of war. / The novel presents a compelling argument about the disarray caused by armed conflict.
  3. Formal: Sleep deprivation is a common issue that negatively impacts mood and cognitive functions, such as concentration in an academic environment.

Part 4: You're the Writer

(These are examples. Your own paragraphs will be different.)

Topic Chosen: A) The impact of social media

Creative/Informal Paragraph:
My phone is like a black hole. I just get sucked in, scrolling and scrolling forever through a sea of perfect pictures and funny videos. Before I know it, an hour's gone by, and I haven't even started my homework. It's a total time-waster, but I can't seem to stop.

Formal/Academic Paragraph:
Social media platforms significantly affect adolescent time management and mental well-being. Excessive use is correlated with decreased productivity in academic tasks and can contribute to feelings of inadequacy due to social comparison. Therefore, its overall impact warrants critical examination.
