Instructions
Welcome! Today we will explore large numbers using base-10 blocks. Remember the value of each block:
- Unit = 1
- Rod = 10
- Flat = 100
- Cube = 1,000
- Ten Thousand Rod = 10,000
- Hundred Thousand Flat = 100,000
We will use these blocks to build (compose) and break down (decompose) numbers up to one million.
Examples
Example 1: Decomposing a Number
Let's break down the number 254,136 into base-10 blocks.
- 2 Hundred Thousand Flats (200,000)
- 5 Ten Thousand Rods (50,000)
- 4 Cubes (4,000)
- 1 Flat (100)
- 3 Rods (30)
- 6 Units (6)
Example 2: Composing a Number
What number is made from 7 Hundred Thousand Flats, 0 Ten Thousand Rods, 9 Cubes, 5 Flats, 8 Rods, and 2 Units?
700,000 + 0 + 9,000 + 500 + 80 + 2 = 709,582
