Did You Know?
- Eyelash Crests: These distinct, spiky scales above the eyes give the gecko its name. The size and shape of the crests can vary between individuals.
- Sticky Toes: Crested geckos are amazing climbers thanks to special adhesive pads on their toes called lamellae. These pads are covered in microscopic, hair-like structures that use van der Waals forces to stick to almost any surface!
- No Eyelids: A crested gecko cannot blink! Instead of eyelids, it has a transparent scale protecting its eye. To keep it clean and moist, the gecko uses its long tongue to lick the scale.
- A Tail with a Grip: The term prehensile means the tail is adapted for grasping or holding. Crested geckos use their tails as a fifth limb to help them balance and grip branches while climbing.
- Tail Autotomy: If a crested gecko feels threatened, it can intentionally detach its tail to distract a predator. This is called caudal autotomy. Unlike many other lizards, a crested gecko's tail does not grow back, leaving it with a little stub for the rest of its life.
