Read each section carefully and complete the activities. Use your knowledge of fish, fishing, and their environments to answer the questions. Good luck!

Part 1: Fish Anatomy - Label the Parts

Below are descriptions of six important external parts of a fish. Match each description with the correct term from the Word Bank.

Word Bank:

  • Dorsal Fin
  • Gills
  • Pectoral Fin
  • Scales
  • Caudal Fin (Tail)
  • Lateral Line

1. This fin is located on the back and helps keep the fish stable, preventing it from rolling over. _________________________

2. These are found on the sides of the fish, just behind the head. They are used for steering and stopping. _________________________

3. This is the main fin for propulsion, pushing the fish forward through the water. _________________________

4. This organ allows the fish to breathe by extracting dissolved oxygen from the water. _________________________

5. This is a line of sensitive sense organs that runs along each side of the fish's body, used to detect movement and vibrations. _________________________

6. These are small, rigid plates that grow out of the skin, providing protection from predators and parasites. _________________________

Part 2: Fishing Gear Match-Up

Draw a line or write the correct letter to match the piece of fishing gear with its primary function.

Gear Function
1. Rod A. A weight used to sink the hook or bait deeper in the water.
2. Lure B. A floating device attached to the line that signals a fish bite by dipping underwater.
3. Bobber C. A long, flexible pole used to cast the line and fight the fish.
4. Sinker D. The crank-operated device that holds and retrieves the fishing line.
5. Reel E. An artificial bait designed to attract fish using movement, color, or vibration.

Part 3: Ecosystem Word Scramble

Unscramble the letters below to reveal key terms related to fish ecosystems. Write the correct word on the line provided.

  1. RPEADTRO - An animal that naturally preys on others. _________________________
  2. AATHBIT - The natural home or environment of an animal or plant. _________________________
  3. NPAWS - The process of fish releasing eggs. _________________________
  4. LUPOLOTNI - The introduction of harmful materials into the environment. _________________________
  5. ODOF HICNA - A series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food. _________________________
  6. YERP - An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food. _________________________

Part 4: Critical Thinking - The Ripple Effect

Imagine a factory is built next to a freshwater lake, and it accidentally releases a chemical that kills off a large portion of the lake's algae and aquatic plants. Describe at least two potential "ripple effects" this event could have on the lake's fish ecosystem. Think about the food chain and different animal roles.

Part 4: Critical Thinking - The Ripple Effect

(Answers will vary, but should demonstrate an understanding of ecosystem connections. Below are sample answers.)

Effect 1: Many small, herbivorous fish (fish that eat plants) would lose their primary food source. This could lead to a decline in their population due to starvation. As a result, larger, carnivorous fish that prey on these smaller fish would also have less food available, potentially causing their populations to shrink or move to other areas.

Effect 2: Algae and aquatic plants produce oxygen in the water through photosynthesis. A massive die-off of these plants would reduce the dissolved oxygen levels in the lake. This could stress or even suffocate fish and other aquatic animals, leading to a less healthy and less diverse ecosystem overall. Additionally, the decomposition of the dead plants would use up even more oxygen.
