Our world, the Earth, is a big sphere (like a ball). We can divide it into halves to help us talk about different places. A half of a sphere is called a hemisphere. Let's learn about the four main hemispheres!

Part 1: Half a World!

Imagine the Earth is a big orange. If you slice it in half, you get two pieces. That's what a hemisphere is! A hemisphere is just half of the Earth.

Activity: Draw a straight line to cut the circle below exactly in half. You can draw it across the middle or from top to bottom.

Part 2: The Equator

The Equator is an imaginary line that runs around the middle of the Earth, like a belt. It splits the Earth into the "top" half and the "bottom" half.

  • The top half is called the Northern Hemisphere.
  • The bottom half is called the Southern Hemisphere.
Activity: In the circle below:
  1. Draw a line across the middle for the Equator.
  2. Color the Northern Hemisphere (the top part) RED.
  3. Color the Southern Hemisphere (the bottom part) BLUE.

Part 3: The Prime Meridian

The Prime Meridian is another imaginary line. This one runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. It splits the Earth into the "left" and "right" halves.

  • The half on the right is the Eastern Hemisphere.
  • The half on the left is the Western Hemisphere.
Activity: In the circle below:
  1. Draw a line from top to bottom for the Prime Meridian.
  2. Color the Eastern Hemisphere (the right side) YELLOW.
  3. Color the Western Hemisphere (the left side) GREEN.

Part 4: Match the Words!

Draw a line to connect the word on the left with its correct meaning on the right.

1. Equator A. The top half of the Earth.
2. Northern Hemisphere B. An imaginary line that runs from top to bottom.
3. Prime Meridian C. The bottom half of the Earth.
4. Southern Hemisphere D. An imaginary line that runs around the middle.

Part 5: Animal Homes

Read the sentences and circle the correct hemisphere.

  1. Polar bears live in the cold, icy north. They live in the:
    Northern Hemisphere   or   Southern Hemisphere

  2. Penguins live in the very cold south, in places like Antarctica. They live in the:
    Northern Hemisphere   or   Southern Hemisphere

Answer Key

Part 1: Half a World!
The student should have drawn one straight line that cuts the circle in half (either horizontally or vertically).

Part 2: The Equator
The student should have drawn a horizontal line across the middle of the circle. The top half should be colored RED and the bottom half should be colored BLUE.

Part 3: The Prime Meridian
The student should have drawn a vertical line from the top to the bottom of the circle. The left half should be colored GREEN and the right half should be colored YELLOW.

Part 4: Match the Words!

  • 1. Equator → D. An imaginary line that runs around the middle.
  • 2. Northern Hemisphere → A. The top half of the Earth.
  • 3. Prime Meridian → B. An imaginary line that runs from top to bottom.
  • 4. Southern Hemisphere → C. The bottom half of the Earth.

Part 5: Animal Homes

  1. Northern Hemisphere
  2. Southern Hemisphere
