Chapter 1

Vocabulary:

  • Cathartic: Providing psychological relief through the open expression of strong emotions.
  • Finite: Having limits or bounds.

Comprehension:

  1. She writes them to say everything she needs to say to a boy when she is ready to get over a crush. She addresses them and keeps them in a hatbox her mother gave her.
  2. The five boys are Peter Kavinsky, Kenny from camp, Lucas Krapf, John Ambrose McClaren, and Josh Sanderson.
  3. Margot believes in not starting college with a boyfriend. She wants to be free to experience new things without being tied down.

Chapter 2

Vocabulary:

  • Solemn: Formal and dignified; serious.
  • Heirloom: A valuable object that has belonged to a family for several generations.

Comprehension:

  1. Margot is going to college at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. The book doesn't say for how long, but a university degree usually takes several years.
  2. The "trinity" refers to the three Song sisters: Margot, Lara Jean, and Kitty. With Margot gone, their special group of three is broken.
  3. Margot leaves Lara Jean a to-do list, a picture of them, and a snow globe. This shows that she cares for Lara Jean, trusts her, and will miss her.

Chapter 3

Vocabulary:

  • Hesitate: To pause before saying or doing something, especially out of uncertainty.
  • Pang: A sudden sharp pain or painful emotion.

Comprehension:

  1. Lara Jean is nervous about driving her sister Kitty to school by herself for the first time.
  2. Josh is their next-door neighbor and has been like a brother to the Song girls for most of their lives.
  3. She is avoiding Josh because he just broke up with Margot. She feels awkward and also may have her own complicated feelings for him, as revealed in Chapter 1.

Chapter 4

Vocabulary:

  • Nostalgic: Feeling happy and also slightly sad when you think about things that happened in the past.
  • Resolve: To decide firmly on a course of action.

Comprehension:

  1. Lara Jean decides to clean Margot's perfectly tidy room because it makes her feel close to her.
  2. She finds a box of things Margot intended to return to Josh, including his grandfather's scrapbook.
  3. She resolves to step up and take over some of Margot's responsibilities, like making sure the house is nice for her dad when he gets home from work.

Chapter 5

  • Mortified: Feeling very embarrassed or ashamed.
  • Nonchalant: Feeling or appearing casually calm and relaxed.

Comprehension:

  1. Chris is Lara Jean's best friend. She is more wild and daring than Lara Jean, who is more of a homebody.
  2. Peter Kavinsky was Lara Jean's first kiss in seventh grade during a game of spin the bottle. He is now dating her ex-best friend, Genevieve.
  3. Peter Kavinsky approaches Lara Jean and tells her he received her love letter. This is shocking because the letters were secret and never meant to be mailed. She is so shocked that she faints.
