Welcome, young historian and musician! This project will take you on a journey back in time to 18th-century Italy to explore one of the most famous pieces of music ever written: "The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi. This music is special because it tells a story without any words, using instruments to paint pictures of each season.

To complete this project, you will need a way to listen to the music. You can easily find "Vivaldi's The Four Seasons" on YouTube or any music streaming service. Listen to each piece as you work through the activities. Get ready to listen, learn, and imagine!

Worksheet 1: Meet the Composer

Let's learn about the man behind the music, Antonio Vivaldi. Read the short biography below and then answer the questions.

Who Was Antonio Vivaldi?

Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy, in 1678. Venice is a city built on water, with canals for streets, which was a very inspiring place to grow up. Vivaldi became a master violinist and a famous composer during a time in history known as the Baroque period.

Vivaldi was also trained as a priest, and because he had bright red hair, he was given the nickname "il Prete Rosso," which means "The Red Priest." However, he didn't spend much time working as a priest. Instead, he dedicated his life to music.

For many years, he worked as a music teacher and composer at a home for orphaned girls in Venice called the Ospedale della Pietà. The girls there were incredibly talented musicians, and Vivaldi wrote many of his famous pieces, including "The Four Seasons," for them to perform. He wrote over 500 concertos in his lifetime, helping to make the violin a popular solo instrument.
