Read the information below and complete the activities that follow. Think about how the perceptions of norms can influence your decisions regarding health and wellness.
Understanding Perceptions of Norms
Norms are the unwritten rules about how to behave in a group or society. These can be about health behaviors, such as diet, exercise, and social habits. When you perceive a norm, you might think that everyone around you behaves a certain way, which can shape your own choices.
For example, if you believe that most of your friends eat a lot of junk food, you might feel it’s okay for you to do the same, even if it’s not healthy. On the other hand, if you see your peers engaging in sports and healthy eating, you might be more motivated to adopt these habits.
Activity 1: Reflect on Your Influences
Take a moment to think about the norms in your friend group or community. Answer the following questions:
- 1. What healthy behaviors do you see commonly practiced among your friends or peers?
- 2. Are there any unhealthy behaviors that you notice? How do they affect your choices?
- 3. How do these perceived norms make you feel about your own health choices?
Activity 2: Norms and Decision Making
Imagine you have to make a decision about your health. Use the scenario below to explore how norms can influence your choice.
Scenario: Your friends invite you to a fast-food restaurant, but you know that you have been trying to eat healthier. What would you do? Write a short paragraph explaining your decision-making process. Consider what your friends might think, how it would impact your health, and what you truly want.
Activity 3: Create a Personal Norm
Think about the healthy habits you want to adopt. Write down three healthy norms you want to set for yourself. These norms should help you make better choices. For example, "I will choose water over soda when I’m thirsty" or "I will join a sports team next season."
