Today we will learn about Perimeter and Area!

  • Perimeter is the distance all the way AROUND a shape. Imagine you're a tiny bug walking along the edges. The total distance you walk is the perimeter. We find it by adding all the side lengths together.
  • Area is the space INSIDE a shape. To find the area, we will count how many little squares it takes to fill up the shape.

Part 1: Find the Perimeter

Add the length of all the sides to find the perimeter of each shape.

1.
5 cm 3 cm

Perimeter = ___ + ___ + ___ + ___ = _____ cm

2.
4 cm 4 cm

Perimeter = ___ + ___ + ___ + ___ = _____ cm

3.
8 cm 2 cm

Perimeter = ___ + ___ + ___ + ___ = _____ cm

Part 2: Find the Area

Count the blue squares to find the area of each shape.

4.

Area = _____ square units

5.

Area = _____ square units

6. A rectangle has a length of 5 squares and a width of 3 squares. What is its area?

Area = _____ square units

Part 3: Perimeter and Area Challenge

Look at the shape below. Find both the perimeter and the area.

7. The length of each square's side is 1 unit.

Perimeter = _____ units

Area = _____ square units

Answer Key

Part 1: Find the Perimeter

  1. Perimeter = 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 cm
  2. Perimeter = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 cm
  3. Perimeter = 8 + 2 + 8 + 2 = 20 cm

Part 2: Find the Area

  1. Area = 8 square units
  2. Area = 9 square units
  3. Area = 15 square units (5 x 3 = 15)

Part 3: Perimeter and Area Challenge

  1. The shape is 5 units long and 3 units wide.
    Perimeter = 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 units
    Area = 15 square units (There are 15 blue squares)
