Let's learn about today's date! Grab a calendar if you need help and fill in the blanks below. We will practice writing the date in three different ways.

Part 1: What is Today?

First, let's find out the details for today.

What is the day of the week? (Example: Monday)

___________________________________

What is the month? (Example: January)

___________________________________

What is the date (the number)? (Example: 15)

___________________________________

What is the year? (Example: 2024)

___________________________________

Part 2: The Long Way

We can write the full date using words. This is the long way to write the date. It's great for writing letters or stories!

Example: Saturday, April 20, 2024

Now, you write today's full date below, using your answers from Part 1.

____________________________________________________

Part 3: The Short Way (with Words)

Sometimes we use a short version, or an abbreviation, for the month to write the date faster. Look at the list below to see how to shorten each month's name.

  • January → Jan.
  • February → Feb.
  • March → Mar.
  • April → Apr.
  • May → May (it's already short!)
  • June → Jun.
  • July → Jul.
  • August → Aug.
  • September → Sep. or Sept.
  • October → Oct.
  • November → Nov.
  • December → Dec.

Example: Apr. 20, 2024

Now, you write today's date using the month's abbreviation.

____________________________________________________

Part 4: The All-Numbers Way!

The fastest way to write the date is with only numbers! We write it in this order: Month / Day / Year. Each month has its own number.

  1. January
  2. February
  3. March
  4. April
  5. May
  6. June
  7. July
  8. August
  9. September
  10. October
  11. November
  12. December

Example: For April 20, 2024, you would write 4/20/2024.

Now, you write today's date using only numbers.
