Part 2: Building Project

For the building project, you will create a simple water filtration system using materials you can find at home. Follow the steps below and document your process and findings.

Materials Needed:

• Plastic bottle (cut in half) or a jar
• Sand
• Gravel
• Activated charcoal (optional)
• Coffee filter or cloth
• Dirty water sample (you can mix soil, tiny leaves, etc. with clean water)

Steps:

1. Layer the materials in the bottom half of your bottle or jar starting with the coffee filter or cloth at the very bottom.
2. Add a layer of activated charcoal (if using), followed by a layer of sand, and finally a layer of gravel on top.
3. Pour the dirty water slowly into the filtration system.
4. Collect the filtered water in a clean container and observe the difference in clarity.
