Instructions

The "bus stop" method helps you divide larger numbers. The number being divided (the dividend) goes inside the bus stop, and the number you are dividing by (the divisor) waits outside.

Example: 468 ÷ 3

  1. Set it up: Draw the bus stop. Put 468 inside and 3 outside.
  2. Divide: How many 3s go into 4? 1. Write the 1 on the line above the 4.
  3. Multiply: 1 x 3 = 3. Write this 3 under the 4.
  4. Subtract: 4 - 3 = 1. Write the 1 below.
  5. Bring down: Bring the next digit (6) down next to the 1 to make 16.
  6. Repeat: How many 3s go into 16? 5. Write the 5 on the line above the 6.
  7. Multiply: 5 x 3 = 15. Write 15 under the 16.
  8. Subtract: 16 - 15 = 1. Write the 1 below.
  9. Bring down: Bring the last digit (8) down next to the 1 to make 18.
  10. Repeat again: How many 3s go into 18? 6. Write the 6 on the line above the 8.
  11. Final check: 6 x 3 = 18. Subtract 18 from 18 to get 0. There is no remainder.

Answer: 468 ÷ 3 = 156

Part 1: Practice Problems

Solve the following problems using the bus stop method. Show your working in the space provided.

1. 864 ÷ 4 = 2. 955 ÷ 5 =
3. 504 ÷ 7 = 4. 378 ÷ 6 =

Part 2: Division with Remainders

Remember, a remainder is what's left over when a number cannot be divided equally. Write your answer with an 'r' for the remainder (e.g., 25 r 3).

5. 529 ÷ 3 = 6. 965 ÷ 8 =
7. 4382 ÷ 9 = 8. 6177 ÷ 4 =

Part 3: Challenge - Dividing by Two Digits

The method is the same, but now you are working with a larger divisor. You might want to write out the times table for the divisor at the side of your page to help you!

9. 828 ÷ 12 = 10. 1652 ÷ 14 =

Part 4: Word Problem

11. A factory produces 3,245 chocolate bars in a day. They are packed into boxes that can hold 15 bars each.

a) How many full boxes can the factory pack in one day?

b) How many chocolate bars will be left over?

Answer Key

Part 1: Practice Problems

  1. 864 ÷ 4 = 216
  2. 955 ÷ 5 = 191
  3. 504 ÷ 7 = 72
  4. 378 ÷ 6 = 63

Part 2: Division with Remainders

  1. 529 ÷ 3 = 176 r 1
  2. 965 ÷ 8 = 120 r 5
  3. 4382 ÷ 9 = 486 r 8
  4. 6177 ÷ 4 = 1544 r 1

Part 3: Challenge - Dividing by Two Digits

  1. 828 ÷ 12 = 69
  2. 1652 ÷ 14 = 118 r 0 (Note: This was a tricky one with a zero remainder!)

Part 4: Word Problem

  1. Calculation: 3245 ÷ 15 = 216 with a remainder of 5.
    • a) How many full boxes can the factory pack in one day? 216 full boxes
    • b) How many chocolate bars will be left over? 5 chocolate bars
