Welcome, Math Explorer! Sometimes in math, we don't need an exact answer. We just need a number that is "close enough." This is called estimating. It's like guessing, but with a math secret!

Here’s the secret trick for estimating multiplication:

  1. Look at the number that has two digits (like 48).
  2. Round it to the nearest friendly ten (48 rounds up to 50).
  3. Now, solve the new, easier problem! (Instead of 48 x 2, you solve 50 x 2).

Example: Estimate 32 x 4

  • Round 32 to the nearest ten, which is 30.
  • Now multiply 30 x 4.
  • Easy trick: Do 3 x 4 = 12, then add the zero back on. The answer is 120!
  • So, 32 x 4 is about 120.

Part 1: Rounding Warm-Up

Before we estimate, let's practice rounding! Round each number to the nearest 10.

1. 47 rounds to ______ 2. 81 rounds to ______
3. 25 rounds to ______ 4. 68 rounds to ______
5. 9 rounds to ______ 6. 53 rounds to ______

Part 2: Let's Estimate!

Follow the example to find the estimate for each problem. Round the two-digit number first.

Original Problem Round the Number New Problem Your Estimate
Example: 29 x 3 29 rounds to 30 30 x 3 90
1. 41 x 5 41 rounds to _____ _____ x 5 = _____
2. 18 x 7 18 rounds to _____ _____ x 7 = _____
3. 62 x 2 62 rounds to _____ _____ x 2 = _____
4. 87 x 4 87 rounds to _____ _____ x 4 = _____

Part 3: You're the Expert!

Now, do the whole estimation yourself! Write down what the problem is about.

1. 59 x 6 is about ______ 2. 31 x 9 is about ______
3. 78 x 5 is about ______ 4. 22 x 8 is about ______
5. 46 x 3 is about ______ 6. 93 x 2 is about ______

Part 4: Story Problem Challenge

Read the story and use estimation to find an answer that is "close enough."

Maya is collecting stickers. She has 9 pages in her sticker book. She wants to put about 28 stickers on each page.

About how many stickers will Maya need in total?

Show your work here:
Round ______ to the nearest ten: ______
New problem: ______ x ______

Maya will need about ________ stickers.

Answer Key

Part 1: Rounding Warm-Up

  1. 50
  2. 80
  3. 30
  4. 70
  5. 10
  6. 50

Part 2: Let's Estimate!

  1. 41 rounds to 4040 x 5 = 200
  2. 18 rounds to 2020 x 7 = 140
  3. 62 rounds to 6060 x 2 = 120
  4. 87 rounds to 9090 x 4 = 360

Part 3: You're the Expert!

  1. 360 (60 x 6)
  2. 270 (30 x 9)
  3. 400 (80 x 5)
  4. 160 (20 x 8)
  5. 150 (50 x 3)
  6. 180 (90 x 2)

Part 4: Story Problem Challenge

Round 28 to the nearest ten: 30
New problem: 30 x 9
Maya will need about 270 stickers.
