The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful empires in history. One of its most famous leaders was Augustus. He was the very first Roman Emperor and ruled for over 40 years. After a long time of fighting and civil wars, Augustus brought a long period of peace known as the Pax Romana (the Roman Peace). During this time, he ordered the building of many new roads, bridges, and impressive buildings in Rome. He said, "I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble." He also created a professional army to defend the empire's borders and made many laws to keep society stable.

The Tudor period was a time of great change in England. The most famous Tudor king was Henry VIII. He is well-known for having six wives. His desire for a son to be his heir led him to break away from the Catholic Church in Rome. When the Pope would not let him divorce his first wife, Henry created his own church, the Church of England. This event is called the Reformation. He also took control of the land and wealth owned by monasteries in an event called the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Henry VIII was a powerful and often ruthless ruler who changed England forever.
