Your challenge is to write five creative sentences. The catch? Each sentence must start in a different way! Follow the prompts below to show off your sentence-starting skills and add variety to your writing.


Sentence Openers Challenge

  1. Start with an adverb. (An adverb describes a verb, often ending in -ly).
    Example: Quickly, the fox darted into the bushes.

  2. Start with a preposition. (A prepositional phrase shows location, time, or direction).
    Example: In the garden, a single red rose bloomed.

  3. Start with dialogue. (Remember to use quotation marks!).
    Example: “Stop!” she shouted, pointing at the strange light in the sky.

  4. Start with a verb ending in –ing. (This is called a present participle phrase).
    Example: Running down the hill, he couldn't stop laughing.

  • With a verb ending –ing: Hoping for the best, the team walked onto the field.
