The Mystery of the Missing Lunchbox

Leo packed his favorite lunch: a peanut butter sandwich, an apple, and a chocolate chip cookie. He placed his bright blue lunchbox in his cubby at school, right next to his friend Sam's green one. He couldn't wait for lunchtime.

When the lunch bell finally rang, Leo raced to his cubby. He reached inside, but his fingers found only empty space. His blue lunchbox was gone! He felt a lump in his throat. Sam came over and asked, "What's wrong?"

"My lunchbox is missing!" Leo wailed.

Together, they decided to be detectives. Their first clue was a trail of tiny crumbs leading away from the cubbies. The crumbs led them past the library and toward the art room. Outside the art room door, they found another clue: a small smear of red paint on the floor, the same color they used for painting volcanoes yesterday.

"Wait a minute," Sam said. "I remember Mia was finishing her volcano painting this morning. And she loves peanut butter."

They found Mia in the art room, sitting at a table. In front of her was Leo's blue lunchbox, wide open. "I'm so sorry, Leo!" she said. "I forgot my lunch today and I was so hungry. I thought this was Sam's lunchbox because it was next to his, and he always shares with me." She looked very embarrassed. Leo was glad to find his lunch, and because Mia was honest, he decided to share his cookie with her anyway.
