Instructions

Hello! Let's have some fun with words today. Read the instructions for each section carefully and try your best. You're about to become a word wizard!

Awesome Adverbs!

Adverbs are special words that tell us more about an action. They can tell us How, Where, or When something happens!

  • How? (Manner): The snail moved slowly.
  • Where? (Place): The bird flew upstairs.
  • When? (Time): We will go to the park tomorrow.

Activity 1: Sorting Time!

Look at the adverbs in the box below. Can you write each one in the correct column?

loudly       soon       outside       gently       yesterday       here
How? (Manner) Where? (Place) When? (Time)

The Amazing Apostrophe!

An apostrophe ( ' ) is a small but mighty punctuation mark. It has two main jobs.

Job 1: Showing Who Owns It!

We add an apostrophe and an 's' ('s) to show that something belongs to someone or something. For example: The bone belonging to the dog becomes The dog's bone.

Now you try! Rewrite the phrases below using 's.

  1. The scarf belonging to Mum.
    _________________________________________________

  2. The bike that belongs to Tom.
    _________________________________________________

  3. The magic wand of the wizard.
    _________________________________________________

Job 2: For Missing Letters!

We also use an apostrophe to show where letters are missing when we join two words together. For example: do not becomes don't. The apostrophe takes the place of the 'o'.

Draw a line to match the two words to their shorter form.

I am she's
he will I'm
she is can't
cannot he'll

Write a Brilliant Blurb!

A blurb is a short description on the back of a book. Its job is to get you excited to read the story, without giving away the ending!

Your Turn to Write!

Imagine a book about a friendly robot named Bolt who gets lost in a jungle full of cheeky monkeys.

Think about these questions to help you get ideas:

  • What is Bolt trying to do? (Find his way home? Find his creator?)
  • What trouble do the monkeys cause? (Do they steal his map? Do they take his shiny buttons?)
  • Will Bolt make a new friend who can help him?

Now, write a short, exciting blurb for the book "Bolt's Jungle Adventure".

Write a Brilliant Blurb!

Answers will vary. A good blurb should be exciting and mention the main character and the problem. Example:

Bolt the robot is far from home and lost in a wild jungle! To make things worse, a gang of cheeky monkeys has stolen his map. Can Bolt outsmart the monkeys and find his way back before his battery runs out? A funny adventure about friendship and courage.
