Instructions

Subtracting money is just like subtracting regular numbers with decimals. The most important rule is to line up the decimal points perfectly! Sometimes, you'll need to "borrow" from the number to the left, which is also called regrouping. Let's look at an example!

Example: $23.45 - $17.78

  1. Line 'em up! Write the problem vertically, making sure the decimal points are in a straight line.
      $23.45
    - $17.78
    ----------

  2. Start with the hundredths place (the pennies). You can't subtract 8 from 5. So, we need to borrow from the tenths place (the dimes). The 4 becomes a 3, and the 5 becomes 15. Now you can subtract: 15 - 8 = 7.
          3 15
      $23.45
    - $17.7 8
    -----------
             7

  3. Move to the tenths place (the dimes). You can't subtract 7 from the 3 that's left. So, we borrow from the ones place (the dollars). The 3 becomes a 2, and our 3 becomes 13. Now subtract: 13 - 7 = 6.
        2 13 15
      $23.45
    - $17.7 8
    -----------
           .6 7

  4. Bring down the decimal point! Always keep it in the same spot.
  5. Move to the ones place. You can't subtract 7 from 2. So, we borrow from the tens place. The 2 becomes a 1, and our 2 becomes 12. Now subtract: 12 - 7 = 5.
      1 12 13 15
     $23.45
    - $1 7.7 8
    -----------
        $5.6 7

  6. Finish with the tens place. 1 - 1 = 0. You don't need to write the 0 at the beginning. The final answer is $5.67.
