History: Ancient Fishing

Read the short passage and answer the questions that follow.

Long before modern fishing rods and reels were invented, early humans had clever ways to catch fish. One of the earliest methods was simply catching fish by hand in shallow water. They also carved sharp, pointed spears from wood or bone to stab fish from the shore or a simple raft. Another ancient tool was the gorge, a small piece of wood or bone sharpened at both ends with a line tied to the middle. When a fish swallowed the gorge, a tug on the line would wedge it in the fish's throat. Eventually, people learned to weave nets from plant fibers, allowing them to catch many fish at once.

  3. In your state, a trout must be at least 14 inches long to keep. You catch one that is 11.5 inches long. How many more inches does it need to grow before you could keep it?

Physical Education: The Angler's Workout

Fishing requires balance, core strength, and arm strength. Try these exercises to get ready for a day on the water!

  • Casting Lunges: Step forward into a lunge. As you lunge, twist your torso to the side as if you were casting a fishing rod. Keep your core tight. Do 5 reps on each side.
  • Reel-In Rows: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Hinge at your hips, keeping your back straight. Extend your arms forward and then pull them back towards your chest, squeezing your shoulder blades together as if you are reeling in a big fish. Do 10 reps.
  • Wobbly Boat Balance: Stand on one foot and try to hold your balance for 30 seconds without letting your other foot touch the ground. Imagine you are on a boat that is gently rocking. Switch legs and repeat.
