Instructions
Read the brief explanations of commas, semicolons, and dashes. Then, complete the exercises by inserting the correct punctuation mark in the blank spaces or by rewriting the sentences correctly.
Punctuation Guide
- Comma ( , ): Used to separate items in a list, to separate independent clauses when joined by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), to set off introductory phrases, and to set off non-essential information.
- Semicolon ( ; ): Used to connect two closely related independent clauses (sentences that could stand on their own). It is also used to separate items in a list when the items themselves contain commas.
- Dash ( — ): Used to indicate an abrupt change of thought, to set off a summary or explanation, or to add emphasis to a point.
Part 1: Choose the Correct Punctuation
For each sentence, fill in the blank with the most appropriate punctuation mark: a comma (,), a semicolon (;), or a dash (—).
- The team celebrated its victory ___ it had been a long, hard-fought season.

The following sentences are punctuated incorrectly. Rewrite each sentence with the correct commas, semicolons, or dashes. Some sentences may need more than one correction.
- I finished my homework then I went to bed.
- The storm was intense, the power went out for three hours.
