Read the Passage

Welcome to Ancient Egypt! A long, long time ago, a great civilization grew along the Nile River in Africa. The river was very important because it provided water for farming and travel. The leaders of Egypt were called pharaohs, who were powerful like kings and queens.

The Ancient Egyptians had a special way of expressing themselves. They did not use letters like A, B, C. Instead, they used a beautiful picture-writing called hieroglyphs. Each small picture symbol could stand for a sound or an idea. They carved these hieroglyphs on temple walls to tell stories about their lives, their pharaohs, and their beliefs.

Religion was a big part of their life. They believed in many gods and goddesses. For example, Ra was the very important sun god. They believed he sailed across the sky every day in a boat. Anubis was the god of the afterlife and had the head of a jackal, a type of wild dog. He helped protect people on their journey after death. Isis was a powerful goddess who was seen as a mother figure and a great healer.
