The Plan for a New Country: The Objectives Resolution of 1949
Imagine your class has decided to create a new club. Before you start, you all need to agree on the main rules. What is the club's purpose? Who can join? How will you choose a leader? These first big rules are your club's guiding principles.
After Pakistan was created in 1947, its leaders had a similar, but much bigger, task. They needed to create a set of guiding principles for the entire country. This plan would help them write the official rulebook, known as the Constitution.
On March 12, 1949, Pakistan's first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, presented this master plan. It was called the Objectives Resolution. It laid out the goals and values that Pakistan would be built upon.
Here are some of the main ideas from the plan:
- Sovereignty of God: The plan stated that all authority and power comes from Allah Almighty. The people of Pakistan would run the country according to His teachings.
- Democracy: The country would be a democracy. This means the people would have the power to choose their own leaders through voting.
- Islamic Principles: The laws and way of life would be guided by the principles of Islam, such as fairness, equality, and social justice.
- Rights for All Citizens: The resolution promised to protect the rights of everyone. It specifically said that minorities (people of different religions, like Christians, Hindus, and Sikhs) would be free to practice their own faith and culture without fear.
- Independent Courts: It promised that the courts and judges would be independent. This means they could make fair decisions based on the law, without pressure from the government or anyone else.
The Objectives Resolution was a very important first step. It set the direction for what kind of country Pakistan aimed to be: a nation that was both Islamic and democratic, where the rights of all citizens were protected.

(Answers will vary, but should be similar to this example.)
It was important because it showed that the new country wanted to be a peaceful and fair place for everyone who lived there. When all citizens feel safe, respected, and included, they can work together to help the country grow stronger. It builds trust and unity among all the people, no matter their religion.
