MISSION BRIEF: Operation Lexicon
Welcome, Agent. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to master a list of high-level academic and technical "code words." In the field, accurate communication is everything. A single misspelled word can change the meaning of a critical message. Your task is to prove you can spell, understand, and use these complex words with precision. Complete the following training levels to become a certified Word Codebreaker.
AGENT TOOLKIT: Target Words & Definitions
Memorize these words and their meanings. They are the key to completing your mission.
- Hypothesis (noun): A proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
- Bureaucracy (noun): A system of government in which most of the important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives.
- Onomatopoeia (noun): The formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g., cuckoo, sizzle).
- Photosynthesis (noun): The process by which green plants use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
- Simultaneously (adverb): At the same time.
- Juxtaposition (noun): The fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect.
- Phenomenon (noun): A fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question.
- Consequence (noun): A result or effect of an action or condition.
Training Level 1: Word Recognition
An enemy agent has scrambled the definitions. Match the correct target word to its definition by writing the word in the blank space provided.
- A word that imitates a sound: ______________________________
- A scientific guess or starting point for an experiment: ______________________________
- Happening at the exact same time: ______________________________
- The process plants use to make food from sunlight: ______________________________
- Placing two different things side-by-side to create contrast: ______________________________
Training Level 2: Field Application
Complete these field reports by filling in the blanks with the correct target word from the Agent Toolkit. You will not use every word.
- The scientist wrote down her ______________________________ before she began the experiment, predicting that the plant would grow faster with more light.
- The loud "thud" of the book hitting the floor is a perfect example of an ______________________________.
- Getting a passport renewed can be a slow process due to all the paperwork and government ______________________________.
- The artist used the ______________________________ of a bright, happy color next to a dark, gloomy one to create a powerful feeling in her painting.
- Forgetting to study for the test had a negative ______________________________; I received a poor grade.
Training Level 3: Decryption Challenge
These code words were intercepted but the letters are jumbled. Unscramble them to reveal the correct target words.
- o h t p h s y s e i n s t ______________________________
- n o n e m o p h e n ______________________________
- y a r c e c u b u a r ______________________________
- u l l e s i t o u n a y m s ______________________________
Training Level 4: Intelligence Analysis
Sort the following words into the correct categories. This will help you recognize patterns in technical language. Some words may fit into more than one category.
Words: Hypothesis, Onomatopoeia, Photosynthesis, Bureaucracy, Juxtaposition
Mainly Used in Science
- ____________________
- ____________________
Mainly Used in English/Arts
- ____________________
- ____________________
Final Mission: Master Communicator
Your final test. Write a short, coherent paragraph (2-4 sentences) that correctly uses at least THREE words from the Agent Toolkit. Your paragraph should demonstrate that you understand their meaning and can spell them correctly.
OPTIONAL: Master Codebreaker Challenge
The word "phenomenon" is unusual because its plural form is "phenomena." Can you think of another academic or scientific word that has an unusual plural form (e.g., one that doesn't just add an -s)?
Your Answer: ________________________________________________________________
