- Create Your Own Clues: In Part 5, show your mastery by writing a sentence with your own context clues.
Part 1: Your Word Detective Toolkit
Just like a detective uses fingerprints and footprints, you can use these four types of clues to figure out a word's meaning.
- Definition/Explanation Clue: The author directly defines the word in the sentence. (e.g., "The estuary, which is where the river meets the sea, is full of wildlife.")
- Synonym Clue: The author uses a word with a similar meaning nearby. (e.g., "He was famished; in fact, he was so hungry he could eat a whole pizza.")
- Antonym Clue: The author uses a word with the opposite meaning to show contrast. (e.g., "Instead of a calm and peaceful dog, they adopted a boisterous and noisy one.")
- Example Clue: The author gives examples that help explain the word. (e.g., "The store sold many types of citrus, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit.")
