Instructions

This worksheet is designed for a 3-year-old and requires an adult facilitator. Read the instructions aloud clearly and encourage the child to use their hands (pointing, circling, or tracing).

  1. Introduce the letters A, B, and S and their sounds before starting the sheet.
  2. Use the table structures below for guided interaction, allowing the child to mark the paper directly.
  3. Always praise effort and participation, regardless of accuracy.
  4. Use thick crayons or markers for easier tracing.

Section 1: The Sound Hunt (A, B, S)

Objective: To connect the letter shape to its sound and a familiar object.

  1. Read the clue aloud.
  2. Ask the child to point to the correct letter that makes the sound.
  3. Ask the child to circle the letter they pointed to.
Clue Letter A Letter B Letter S
I sound like /a/ /a/ (as in APPLE). A B S
I sound like /s/ /s/ (as in SUN). B A S
I sound like /b/ /b/ (as in BALL). S B A

Section 2: Following the Sound Path

Objective: To practice fine motor skills by tracing a path and associating the sound with the final object.

  1. Say the letter sound at the start of the path (e.g., "Start at the /b/ sound!").
  2. Ask the child to draw a line (trace the path) from the starting letter to the correct matching picture.
Start Letter Path/Tracing Line End Picture
A Draw a path from A to the Apple. Apple
B Draw a path from B to the Ball. Ball
S Draw a path from S to the Sun. Sun
A Ball
S Apple
B Sun

Section 3: Circle the Starting Sound

Objective: To identify which letter makes the beginning sound of a spoken word. (The adult points to the row and says the picture name).

  1. Point to the row and clearly say the name of the object in the Word column.
  2. Ask the child: "Which letter makes the sound we hear at the beginning of [Word]?"
  3. Ask the child to circle the correct starting letter.
Word (Adult says aloud) Choice 1 Choice 2 Choice 3
Apple S A B
Ball A B S
Sun B S A
Ant S A B
Bat A S B

Section 4: Trace the Shapes (Challenge/Pre-Writing)

Objective: To practice the basic lines and shapes used in forming letters (scaffolding).

  1. Show the child where to start tracing the shape.
  2. Ask them to use their crayon to trace the lines carefully.
Shape/Line Example Trace (Adult can draw dots first)
Straight Down Line (for B) Trace down, down, down.
Circle/Curve (for S) Trace around the big circle.
Angled Line (for A) Trace slant, slant, across.
