Instructions

Welcome to the Holiday Narrative Workshop! In this session, you will explore different writing techniques focusing on perspective, mood, and genre. Follow the steps below, paying close attention to the structural requirements for each prompt.

  1. Read the instructions for each section carefully before beginning.
  2. Use descriptive language (strong verbs and sensory details) in all your responses.
  3. Write legibly and leave appropriate spacing for editing and review.

Part 1: Crafting the Perfect Opening

Goal: To establish a clear setting, mood, and narrative hook in a single paragraph.

Prompt A: The Unspoken Christmas

Start your narrative using this opening sentence and complete the paragraph (5-8 sentences total). Your paragraph must clearly establish the setting, the underlying mood (e.g., tense, joyful, isolated), and a compelling narrative hook that makes the reader want to know more.

Starting Sentence: It was the one Christmas nobody in the town talks about anymore…

Write your opening paragraph here. (Use the space provided for your response.)

Part 2: Perspective Twist

Goal: To describe a common scene (Christmas morning) from an unusual, non-human point of view (POV).

Prompt B: The Life of an Object

First, choose an inanimate object that might be present on Christmas morning (e.g., a dusty old bauble, a half-eaten gingerbread man, the bow on a present). Then, fill out the planning table to help you shift your perspective. Finally, write a short descriptive paragraph (3-5 sentences) from the object's point of view.

Object Chosen Primary Sensory Input (What can it 'sense'?) Object's 'Goal' or Internal Conflict Key Adjective for Mood
Example: The Pine Needle Sticky warmth, booming laughter Stay attached to the branch; avoid the vacuum Anxious

Write your object's perspective paragraph here.

Part 3: Genre Challenge

Goal: To consciously use conventions and structural elements specific to a chosen literary genre.

Prompt C: Genre Scene

Choose one of the genres listed below. Write a short Christmas scene (4-6 sentences) that clearly demonstrates your understanding of the genre. You must intentionally include at least three specific conventions associated with that genre (e.g., if you choose Horror, include isolation, a sudden noise, and a shadowy figure).

Choose One:

  • Horror
  • Mystery
  • Comedy
  • Dystopian
  1. Genre Chosen: _____

  2. Three Conventions I Will Use: a. b. c. _____

Write your genre scene here.

Part 4: Extension & Reflection

Challenge Question (Optional)

Imagine you are a professional novelist. You decide to write a holiday story that combines two of the genres from Part 3 (e.g., Mystery and Comedy). Explain in 2-3 sentences what the biggest challenge would be in making those two genres work together effectively.
