Instructions
Welcome, Editor! Today, we are focusing on making sentences strong and clear by mastering Active and Passive Voice. Follow these steps carefully:
- Complete the Sentence Scavenger Hunt to review subjects and verbs.
- Read the definitions and identify the voice in different sentences.
- Complete the Conversion Challenge by rewriting weak passive sentences into powerful active sentences.
- Tackle the final Editor's Desk Challenge to apply your skills to a real-world writing example.
Section 1: Sentence Scavenger Hunt (The Core)
Before we look at voice, we must find the main actors and actions. The Subject performs the action, and the Verb is the action.
Task: Read the sentences below. Identify the Subject and the Main Verb, and write them in the chart. (HINT: Ignore small words like 'a,' 'the,' or helping verbs like 'is' or 'was' for the main verb.)
| Sentence | Subject | Main Verb | Example Voice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The busy librarian sorted the books quickly. | librarian | sorted | Active |
| 2. The new stadium will be finished by spring. | |||
| 3. My cousin is running the marathon next month. | |||
| 4. Last night, the street lights flickered and went out. | |||
| 5. A surprise party was planned by the entire family. | |||
| 6. The enormous spider built its web near the window. |
Section 2: Active vs. Passive Voice Check
REMINDER BOX:
- Active Voice: The Subject performs the action. (The cat chased the mouse.) -> Stronger Writing!
- Passive Voice: The Subject receives the action. (The mouse was chased by the cat.) -> Often uses a form of 'to be' (is, was, were) and might include 'by.'
Task: Read each sentence. Circle (or write) 'A' for Active or 'P' for Passive Voice.
- The artist painted a beautiful mural. (A / P)
- The fence was damaged by the strong wind. (A / P)
- We always recycle plastic bottles and cans. (A / P)
- The old puzzle had been completed by the team. (A / P)
- Every morning, the birds wake me up early. (A / P)
Section 3: The Conversion Challenge
Passive voice can make writing weak and confusing. Convert the following passive sentences into strong, clear active sentences. Identify who or what is performing the action, and make that the new subject of the sentence.
Example:
- (Passive) The cookies were eaten by the hungry children.
- (Active) The hungry children ate the cookies.
Convert these:
-
(Passive) The winning trophy was lifted by the captain. (Active) ____
-
(Passive) Important decisions were made yesterday by the committee members. (Active) ____
-
(Passive) The bicycle tire was punctured by a sharp nail. (Active) ____
-
(Passive) Mistakes were sometimes made by the new worker. (Active) ____
-
(Passive) The hidden treasure chest had been found by the pirate crew. (Active) ____
Section 4: The Editor's Desk (Advanced Challenge)
When writing reports or stories, use active voice to make the action clear and direct. Read the short passage below. It contains three passive voice sentences that make the passage sound slow. Rewrite the paragraph using strong active voice throughout.
Original Passage:
The ancient stone statue was discovered last week by Professor Jones. The artifact was quickly moved to the museum by her team. Then, a security guard noticed a strange inscription on the base. The public was told about the discovery on Friday.
