Welcome to the Story Upgrade Workshop! Good writers use precise words and clear sentence structures to make their stories exciting. Follow these steps to polish your editing and writing skills.
- Read the instructions for each section carefully before starting.
- Complete the tasks, focusing on using stronger words and making smooth connections between your ideas.
- Complete the optional Challenge Editor section if you finish early.
Section 1: Sentence Surgeons
Objective: Combine short, choppy sentences into one longer, clearer sentence using connecting words (like and, but, because, when, or, so). (4 Points Each)
Example:
Original: The puppy ran. He wanted the squeaky toy.
Combined: The puppy ran because he wanted the squeaky toy.
- Original: The rain poured down. We stayed inside. We played board games.
Combined:
- Original: Sarah loves pizza. She does not like pepperoni on it.
Combined:
- Original: The hiker saw a huge bear. The hiker slowly backed away.

Section 2: Power Up Your Verbs
Weak verbs (like was, is, went, said, saw, looked) make writing boring. Replace the weak underlined verb in the sentence fragment with a strong action verb. (2 Points Each)

Section 3: The Flow Master (Transitions)
Transition words (like first, next, finally, however, also) help ideas connect smoothly. Choose the best transition word from the box below to fill the blanks in the story. (3 Points Each)

- Replace at least three weak verbs with strong verbs.
- Use at least one transition word to connect ideas.
Original Paragraph:
The small spaceship was quiet. The robot was walking slowly across the floor. It was looking for the power source. The power source was broken. The robot said to the pilot, "I see a solution now." The robot grabbed the tool kit. It fixed the power source.
