Your Task: For each sentence, you will identify and mark the two main parts.

  1. Underline the Complete Subject once (S).
  2. Underline the Complete Predicate twice (P).

Example: The brave astronaut launched the powerful rocket. (S: The brave astronaut; P: launched the powerful rocket)


Part 1: Basic Sentence Structure Practice

Read the following sentences and underline the Complete Subject (once) and the Complete Predicate (twice).

  1. The playful kitten chased the bright laser light across the floor.
  2. My best friend accidentally dropped the large box of pencils.
  3. Huge crowds watched the championship parade through the city streets.
  4. The tiny seed grew quickly into a healthy sunflower plant.
  5. Several students organized a recycling drive for the entire school.

Part 2: The Separation Station

In this section, separate the Complete Subject (CS) from the Complete Predicate (CP) and identify the Simple Subject (SS) (the main noun) and the Simple Predicate (SP) (the main verb).

Some sentences have subjects hidden in the middle or implied (not stated). Underline the Subject once and the Predicate twice.

  1. Stop that running inside the classroom immediately! (Hint: This is a command.)
  2. Through the dark woods ran the frightened deer and its young fawn.
  3. Why were you shouting so loudly during the movie?
  4. My uncle and his neighbor built a massive treehouse last summer.
