Instructions
This worksheet will help you practice addition and subtraction. Read the instructions carefully for each section and show your best work!
- Complete the addition problems quickly in Section 1.
- Use the chart in Section 2 to practice mental math or counting on.
- Read the story problems in Section 3 and write the math equation needed to solve them.
- Complete the challenge sections if you want extra practice!
Section 1: Addition Fast Facts
Solve these basic addition problems. Try to answer them without counting on your fingers!
- $4 + 3 = $
- $7 + 2 = $
- $5 + 5 = $
- $8 + 1 = $
- $9 + 0 = $
- $6 + 4 = $
- $3 + 8 = $
- $9 + 5 = $
- $7 + 7 = $
- $10 + 6 = $
Section 2: Building Blocks
Complete the table by finding the sum (total). The first row is done for you as an example.
| Start Number | Add This Number | Total Sum |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 4 | 9 |
| 3 | 7 | |
| 9 | 8 | |
| 11 | 5 | |
| 4 | 12 | |
| 6 | 9 |
Section 3: Real-World Math: The Pet Store
Read each story problem. Write the addition equation and then find the answer.
Example: The pet store had 5 goldfish and 3 rainbow fish. How many fish did they have in total? (Equation: $5 + 3 = 8$)

Section 4: Reverse Gear: Subtraction and Fact Families
Subtraction is the opposite of addition! A Fact Family uses the same three numbers to create two addition equations and two subtraction equations.
Fill in the missing number to complete the Fact Family. We will use the numbers 4, 7, and 11.
| Operation | Equation |
|---|---|
| Addition | $4 + 7 = 11$ |
| Addition | $7 + 4 = 11$ |
| Subtraction | $11 - 7 = 4$ |
| Subtraction | $11 - 4 = 7$ |
Your Turn: Use the numbers 5, 13, and 8 to complete this Fact Family. (Hint: $5 + 8 = 13$)
| Operation | Equation |
|---|---|
| Addition | $5 + 8 = 13$ |
